What is Sound Card in Computer ?

A sound card is an expansion card which is connected to the motherboard PCI or PCI-Express slot. sound card is a audio output hardware peripheral that is used to increase the audio processing power of a computer, and make sound output High quality.

Sound card converts the analog to digital signal for input sound using mirophone, and after processing it converts digital to analog signal for headphones or speakers. sound card is commonly used in gaming and video editing for better audio quality or connecting extra speaker, microphone. we can extend audio input output ports for connecting multiple speaker, microphone or headphone. Every computer has inbuilt sound card that is called integrated sound card.

There are two types of sound cards

1. Integrated Sound(on motherboard) - The Sound card which is built onto the motherboard are known as Integrated Sound chip(audio chip), Integrated Sound are generally used in laptops and it is not easily upgradable.
Integrated Sound chip doesn't use a separate hardware for audio processing. It use system main memory(RAM) and CPU for producing the better sound. Integrated sound card has limited audio ports. Audio ports is called AUX port.

2. Dedicated sound card(External sound card) - The Dedicated sound card is External audio processing unit that is connected to the motherboard PCI or PCI-Express slot. Dedicated sound card is very powerful as compare to Integrated sound chip. Dedicated sound card has greater audio processing Unit that produce better audio quality. We can extend audio input or output port using the dedicated sound card. Mostly Dedicated sound card used by the people who are working with audio editing, gaming and others. Examples are Asus Xonar AE, Sound Blaster Z, EVGA Nu Audio Card, ASUS Essence STX II, AudioQuest, Sabrent USB etc.
