What is Hard Disk?

Storage devices in computers are used to store and retain data, either temporarily or permanently. They provide a way to store information so that it can be retrieved and used again at a later time.

A storage device a type of computer hardware that is used for storing or extracting data files. Storage devices can hold and store information both temporarily and permanently. They may be internal or external to a computer, server or cloud Storage.

A hard disk drive (HDD) is one type of storage device that is commonly used in computers. An HDD consists of one or more spinning disks (also known as platters) coated with magnetic material, and an arm with a read/write head that moves over the disk to read and write data. The disk rotates at high speed and the read/write head accesses the disk surface to read or write data to specific magnetic regions, known as sectors, on the disk.

Hard disk drives offer a large amount of storage space and are relatively inexpensive, making them a popular choice for storing large amounts of data. However, they are mechanical devices and can be vulnerable to physical shock and wear over time, which can lead to data loss. In recent years, solid-state drives (SSDs) have become increasingly popular as a alternative to HDDs as they have faster read and write speeds, are more reliable, and are less sensitive to physical shock.

Types of storage devices

  • Floppy Disks
  • Optical Storage Devices
  • External HDDs and SSDs
  • Flash memory devices
  • cloud Storage

what is hard disk drive(HDD) ?

HDD is a data storage device that is connected to the motherboard of computer. Mechanical Hard Disk has spinning disks (like CD disk) inside where data is stored magnetically. The HDD has an arm with one or more "heads" that read and write data on the disk. The arm moves the heads across the surface of the disk to access different data on differenct locations.

HDDs are considered a legacy technology, meaning HDD been around longer than (long term used) SSD. In general, HDDs are lower in cost and are practical for data that is slower than SSD and does not need to be accessed data frequently, such as backups of photos, videos or Documents files. They are available in two common form factors: 2.5 inch which is commonly used in laptops and 3.5 inch which is commonly used in desktop computers.

What Is an SSD(Solid State Drive)?

SSD stands for Solid State Drive because it has solid part inside. In SSD, all data is stored in integrated circuits. SSD based on NAND flash chip that is much faster than tranditional Mechanical Hard Disk drive. SSDs writes data to a pool of NAND flash, which is made up of floating gate transistors. NAND chips in solid state drives are organised in a grid and rows, or pages. Reading and writing data is much faster on SSDs. SSD is small in size and performance is great, Because of no moving parts SSDs can reduce to the shape and size .

SSD is mostly used in laptops (as well as desktop) making them flexible for smaller devices, such as slim laptops. SSDs reduce access time because of no moving parts and its loads all software quickly. SSDs are more expensive than HDDs per amount of storage (in gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB)), but the gap is closing as SSD prices declining at a faster pace that HDD prices year over year.

How To Connect Hard disk or SSD?

The two most common form factors for modern HDDs or SSDs are 3.5-inch, for desktop computers, and 2.5-inch, primarily for laptops. HDDs or SSDs are connected to systems by standard interface cables such as PATA (Parallel ATA), SATA (Serial ATA), USB(External HDDs or SSDs) or SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) cables.
